Voters Must Be Protected From Fraud - Simon Hughes

9.21.11pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 4th Apr 2005

Commenting on the verdict delivered by Richard Mawrey QC on six Labour party councillors accused of postal vote fraud in Birmingham, Liberal Democrat Party President, Simon Hughes MP said:

"These activities by Labour Party candidates in Birmingham are disgraceful.

"Changes in electoral law are clearly required - but sadly will be too late for this General Election.

"The Electoral Commission must now take action to ensure that people are aware of how to protect their votes from theft.

"The Police must recognise the seriousness of offences that threaten the democratic process and be prepared to investigate rigorously.

"Any member of the public who suspects illegal vote rigging is happening should immediately go to the police.

"Liberal Democrat candidates and agents have been advised to issue guidance to postal voters warning them not to hand over their postal votes to anyone. They have also been advised to respect the Electoral Commission guidance in relation to postal votes."
